In the following, why is there not a grammatical problem in saying "larger in area than europe"?

In this sentence, "area" simply means "size." Europe's area is about 3.9 million square miles (10.2 million km2). Saying "Larger in area than Europe" is they same as saying "Larger in size than Europe." It's perfectly acceptable.
