Can smoking cigarettes deter the body from getting better when sick?

I'm a little worried about a dear friend who continues to smoke quite heavily even though she has been sick for 3 weeks, and now has been diagnosed with bronchitis. I tried to gently say she should stop smoking and she got angry with me. I'm very worried that her smoking is making her more sick. Should I be worried?
